Tips to Stay Productive on the Road

Traveling for work not only takes you away from the office but also far from your usual routine. When you’re sleeping in a different bed, eating different food, or working from a different desk, it can be tough to get into your typical working mindset. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. We have some tips you can follow to stay productive on the road.

Bring your own power

Be prepared for all the devices with which you need to work, from your laptop to your phone, tablet, or anything else you might require. Charge and bring a battery pack that you can use on any of your devices. Make sure you have charging cables for each and every one of your devices. If you will be traveling at all by car, include a car charger that will let you plug in at least one but preferably two USB cables.

If possible, consider bringing your own Wi-Fi when you travel. While having your own Wi-Fi may not be necessary, you will most likely be happy that you brought it, particularly if you find your hotel wireless to be as slow as dial-up. Finishing up work will go a lot faster with your own high-speed connection.

Plan Everything

Preparation is key to make sure everything at the office stays on track while you are away. This preparation goes beyond setting an out-of-office message; it also involves planning your workload.

It’s likely that you have work projects that are more conducive to being done while sitting at a desk, while others could easily be done in a mobile environment. Before you travel, break up your projects into these two categories, then you will know which projects should be worked on depending on your location.

Eat Well and Drink Plenty of Water

A poor diet will result in fatigue, lack of focus, and makes you more prone to illnesses. In short, road food is not typically healthy food. Always being on the move to new places can wear on your body more than you think. Maintain your energy by snacking moderately on healthy, energy-rich snacks that will boost your brain power, and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Find your focus

Do whatever it takes to optimize your time and comfort. Spend a little time creating a playlist that gets you into work mode. Instrumental music is brain food for humans, and there are various genres of instrumental music out there that can match almost any personality type. Then, when it’s time to work, plug in your headphones and let yourself get into the zone. This is one of the best ways to stay productive while working. Having the same focus music helps your brain realize that it’s time to work, no matter where you are.

Re-energize with Exercise

A mere fifteen minutes of exercise can boost your brain and energy and help you get focused to work again. Use fitness as part of your daily routine and get more out of your long workdays. Whether you choose to exercise in the hotel gym, outside, or even in your hotel room, you can take an exercise break just about anywhere. When you feel yourself lagging stop and take a brisk walk, do some yoga, shoot some hoops, or any other form of exercise you prefer.

No matter how productive you are on the road, it’s also important to take care of yourself and unwind at the end of a long day.
